The Marlowe Society

The Marlowe is one of Cambridge's oldest student drama societies, and is dedicated to high-quality performances of Elizabethan, verse, and non-realist plays including classics and plays rarely seen on the professional stage. Its alumni include Rupert Brooke, Trevor Nunn, Ian McKellen, Derek Jacobi, Corin Redgrave, Sam Mendes, Rachel Weisz and many others.

We present an annual production in the Cambridge Arts Theatre during the spring, with a professional Director and Design team and student casts and production crews. Past productions include large-scale presentations of 'Twelfth Night', 'The Taming of the Shrew' and 'Macbeth'.

This year's Arts Show is in October, when alumnus Trevor Nunn returns to direct a student cast in 'Cymbeline'. It is the play in which he first worked with Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi. (For more information or to book tickets, visit www.cambridgeartstheatre.com.)

We also put on other performances, talks, directing workshops and events throughout the year, including the annual Marlowe Lecture.

The Marlowe also strongly promotes new student play writing, annually awarding the Marlowe/RSC Other Prize, and running Scriptlab - a series of writing development workshops led by external writers and directors. The society prides itself on being welcoming and innovative, and linking the thriving world of Cambridge drama to the professional theatrical scene.
