Producers
The
producer is in charge of the smooth administration of the show. Much of the work is delegated to other members of the production team but it is up to the
producer to liaise, making sure the show is proceeding to schedule and within budget. Sometimes particular shows advertise for a
producer via email lists, but often a
director will find a
producer before applying for funding and they will write the application together.
The
producer’s first task is to put together the rest of the production team by organising adverts and interviewing applicants. With the team on board, an initial production meeting is held to discuss ideas and to plan future meetings and schedules. Regular production meetings are not always necessary but can help to ensure everyone is working and communicating well.
The
producer is also in charge of money: a budget, balancing the available money and requirements of the show, is drawn up in conjunction with the funding body. Sometimes the
producer will be issued with a cheque book. However, it is most likely that the
producer will collect receipts from the production team to submit for reimbursement by the society. Invoices for
printing, equipment hire and other expensive services can go straight to the society’s committee.
There are several deadlines which the venue sets in the run-up to the show. These will include
publicity deadlines (to approve printed material before it is sent to press) and technical dead-lines (to check the viability and safety of technical proposals). The
producer is in charge of ensuring the team meets these and any other deadlines.
