Pieces is a gritty, emotionally exposed short film about love that cannot be lived safely.

Umar and Malachi are young, gay, and in love. But love cannot protect them from the world. A world shaped by faith, tradition, race, and fear. Their “relationship” exists in stolen moments: on benches, in bedrooms, behind locked bathroom doors, anywhere they can’t be seen. There is tenderness between them, but also damage.
Umar is a closeted Muslim boy, struggling with religious guilt and family pressure to live a life that is not his own. Malachi is an openly gay Black boy who has already fought to exist authentically and openly bears the scars of that fight. While Malachi can love openly, Umar cannot. And this imbalance slowly destroys them both.
The film does not ask whether they love each other. That is never in doubt. Instead, it asks a more painful question: What happens when love is real, but impossible to choose?
