Brickhouse Theatre Company
- Brickhouse

Brickhouse Theatre Company is the resident theatre company of Robinson College, Cambridge. Every year we hold at least five productions in our two wonderful venues: the well equipped 230-seater Robinson Auditorium and the beautiful outside amphitheatre, the Maria Björnson Theatre. We also help fund shows in other venues around Cambridge and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Recent Brickhouse shows have included: 'A Very Brexit Musical', 'Jerusalem', 'Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat', 'Songs for a New World', 'American Idiot' and 'Jesus Christ Superstar'. Every year we also host the Gilbert and Sullivan Society's freshers' show and accommodate for the performance of new student writing. On top of all this, Brickhouse hosts regular comedy nights in Robinson's Red Brick Cafe/Bar.

Applications for show funding, or to direct a show in either of our two venues, are always welcome. We are also keen to here from people interested in getting involved in other aspects of the theatre, from light and sound and set design, to front of house. While we will advertise for specific projects, please feel free to apply speculatively using the application form available on our website:

Brickhouse remains very open to members of other colleges and responds positively to all interest expressed. Feel free to get in contact at any time, whatever your interest or experience!

Brickhouse Theatre Company posted: We are very excited to announce our line-up for Lent term! Our highlight of the term will be our production of Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater’s 'Spring Awakening', which will run for five nights between the 20th and 24th of February. 'Spring Awakening' charts the coming of age of 11 late 19th century German teenagers, through the medium of folk-infused rock. It deals with a myriad of issues – sex, mental health, death, suicide, sexual and physical abuse and the struggles of being subjected to the parentocracy. This poignant musical, based on the 1891 play by Frank Wedekind, is dark, funny and heart-breaking and explores the blurred lines of adolescence/adulthood of pain/pleasure, the stark contrast of conservativeness/progressiveness and 19th century Germany/alternative-rock. It is a musical that manages to speak to people of all ages – especially young people - due to the universality and pertinence of its themes, the complexity of its characters and the haunting beauty of its score. We will also be showcasing new student-written theatre, namely Jamie Webb's 'Teaching British Values'. Books are being banned. Students are being sent to specialist behavioural units for; their only crime is reading. Teachers are being forced to stay silent. The world is changing and freedom is the price of safety. When Jessica reads a banned book, her whole life is changed as she realizes the system she is in is designed to oppress her, not protect her. She finds herself with a single teacher as her ally, against not only her whole school, but the government at large. She’s determined to fight, she’s determined to be brave. Everyone else is determined to silence her. 'Teaching British Values' will run for three nights from the 8th to the 10th of February. Finally, we bring you Dario Fo's 'Accidental Death of an Anarchist' in association with the Cambridge University Italian Society. The police force is in panic, the population on the verge of a riot – and who is the mysterious Maniac recently arrived at the station? Part buffoon, part angel of justice, he embroils the police in a series of games, ranging from the ridiculously farcical to the deadly serious. Come and see the fifth annual Italian-language production by the Cambridge Italian Society, a bold production that integrates the Italian and English languages to bring to life Dario Fo’s most daring, explosive and darkly comic masterpiece. This show will run from the 15th to the 17th of February. Tickets for all of our shows are on sale now from: We look forward to seeing you at the Brickhouse Theatre soon! — Products shown: Teaching British Values.
