Checchina's Virtue
Checchina's Virtue is the 2025 St Edmund's College May Week Play by its Theatre Society, Curtain Call Collaborative.
A depiction of victorian female alienation
This text was written by Matilde Serao and published in 1884, in a collection of short stories that
set out to realistically represent the inner life of young women, something that no male author
was able to do, according to its author.
Serao set out to imitate and challenge French authors’ production, and this story was thought to
be a parody of Madame Bovary.

"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife."
When Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy first meet, it's dislike at first sight. Born into a lesser noble family with four sisters, with nothing to recommend them but their charms, Elizabeth is beneath the wealthy Mr Darcy's notice. Elizabeth sees Mr Darcy as a man born only of unpleasant arrogance and privilege. Their pride and prejudice blinds them to each other's true feelings, but can they overcome their flaws in spite of all obstacles, and find their way to happiness together?
Experience Jane Austen's classic tale of hate to love, revitalised in this production full of laughter, colour, and life.

Step into the elegant world of Victorian England with our uproarious adaptation of Oscar Wilde's timeless classic, "An Ideal Husband." Set against the backdrop of high society, this comedic gem follows the lives of Sir Robert Chiltern and his charming wife, Lady Gertrude, whose seemingly perfect life is threatened by scandal and blackmail.
As secrets unravel and schemes unfold, audiences will be swept away on a whirlwind of witty dialogue, clever plot twists, and hilarious misunderstandings. The play is a brilliant example of Wilde’s wit and skill at pulling off a rather ridiculous plot. There is plenty of banter and paradoxes, but also melodrama, romance, and genuine insight into human psychology.
With extravagant costumes, lavish sets, and a talented cast bringing Wilde's iconic characters to life, this production promises an evening of laughter, romance, and intrigue.
Whether you're a devoted fan of Wilde's works or simply in search of a delightful evening at the theater, "An Ideal Husband" offers something for everyone.
