The all-new BATS devised theatre competition!!

Dates: 23rd - 25th Jan 2026

You are invited to the inaugural event of BATS: In the Wings.

This competition offers theatre enthusiasts three days to devise their own piece of theatre and perform it to a panel of experienced theatre makers with the chance to win a prize.

We are looking for theatre enthusiasts - actors, writers or directors, no experience required - who are interested in meeting new people and creating some fresh, exciting and innovative theatre together!

You can sign up individually and we will place you with other people in a team or sign up with a team ready to go (up to 5 people per team). The stimulus for the devised piece will be released at 7.30pm on Friday 23rd January 2026 and the performance will be at 8pm on Sunday 25th Jan 2026. The piece can be up to 10 minutes long, it can be rehearsed or improvised on the spot - it is entirely up to you. Over the rehearsal period, you will have access to rehearsals spaces within Queens’, support and advice from the BATS committee and drop-in workshops that will offer different tools you may want to use.

Everything about your piece is entirely up to you, including but not limited to: content, character, genre, staging, audience layout and more… So whether you have a story you’ve always wanted to tell, there are things you want to see represented in theatre that aren’t or you just want to be creative and have some fun with a group of people then Bats: In the Wings is for you.

If you have a pre-organised group then you only need to answer the required questions. If you are signing up as an individual then please answer all the questions so that we can put you in the right group. If you don’t want to perform but still want to get involved in a writing/directing style role please still sign up and indicate that below.
