The Cambridge Greek Play 2026Greek Play
19:30, Wed 14th – Sat 17th October 2026 at Cambridge Arts Theatre
Michaelmas Week 1

Applications open for the following instruments: • Clarinet (and doubling bass clarinet) • Violin • Cello • Percussion

The Cambridge Greek Play committee is excited to announce that musical applications are now open for the Cambridge Greek Play 2026!

Every three years a production of ancient Greek drama is staged in Cambridge, in the original language with English subtitles. The show has professional direction and design, and student actors and crew. No prior knowledge of ancient Greek is expected or required. This is a tradition that goes back to 1882; one which has attracted some of the best actors, musicians and composers of their generation (including in recent years Tom Hiddleston!).

We are pleased to announce that this year’s production will be of Euripides’ Ion. The main rehearsal period will take place in September, prior to the show in October.

In an exciting turn, this year’s production will feature a mix of professional and student musicians, who will be playing music expressly composed for the play by Professor in Composition Richard Causton. The music will be written for an ensemble comprising clarinet, percussion, violin, cello, recorder, accordion and q’anun (the Middle-Eastern lyre), including professional musicians joining us especially from Greece.

As such we are looking for applications to the following parts:

    • Clarinet (and doubling bass clarinet)
    • Violin
    • Cello
    • Percussion

Auditions will take the following form:

    • You will be asked to play 5-10 minutes of 2 contrasting solo pieces or extracts of your choice; please note that the panel would prefer one of these to be more modern if possible, but that it will not affect your chances if you are unable to do so. Accompanists will neither be provided nor required.
    • This will be followed by a short discussion with the panel

Auditions will take place in Lecture Room 3, Faculty of Music, between 2:15pm and 6:00pm on Monday 4th May, places will be offered by Friday 8th May.

    Your application

Applications must be sent in by Thursday 30th April to be considered. Please include in your application:

    • Your name, crsid, phone number, college and instrument
    • Why you want to be considered for this role
    • Any relevant previous experience

We look forward to receiving your applications!
