For the 350th anniversary of Emmanuel College Chapel, this production reimagines John Blow's Venus and Adonis as a light and slightly wild masque staged for the 'court' of college residents. With a calculating Cupid, a romantic and careless Venus, and a lazy and slightly pathetic Adonis, the production wraps its humour in an atmosphere of deep bucolic nostalgia, turning this 'court' into a vestigial, contemporary Arcadia. This performance invites its audience into its shared secret: that they, too, are complicit in this world where, for the night, farce answers to no higher law.
