Dryden Society Scratch Night – Dryden
19:45, Fri 28th November 2025 at Winstanley Lecture TheatreMichaelmas Week 7
The Dryden Society is looking for DIRECTORS and ASSISTANT DIRECTORS to work on a selection of new writing extracts for our Scratch Night (28th November 2025). https://forms.gle/yV9KjzhUZcSdDwxt7 Please fill in the form by Sat 22nd Nov if interested! This is a fantastic opportunity for people looking for a low-commitment directing role, or those looking to try out directing/ADing in Cambridge for the first time. There won't be a stressful selection process - we are looking for enthusiastic directors willing to work creatively to bring new student writing to life!
We are looking for directors to work on five fantastic extracts:
The Acrylic Tiger by Mimi Thompson
Ahtta, an older man, lives alone in London and spends his time painting. He is
retired from work, his wife has passed away, and his family don’t visit often. Ahtta spends his time
painting. One day, he paints an acrylic tiger, and, to his surprise, it comes to life inside the painting. The
two form a friendship and confide in each other.
The Polycule and the Flop by Yusuf Adia
A group of four friends, with a slightly entangled history, return to dinner as they have done many times before. The group are planning to dine and then go for a spot of night climbing. Quite quickly into the dinner, tension arises as issues of alcohol dependence and healing from relationships are touched upon.
Byromania by Annie Fogden
'BYROMANIA!' is based on a real house party thrown by Lord Byron in 1815 attended by his wife, Annabella Milbanke, his ex, Caroline Lamb, and his sister/lover (!) Augusta Leigh. This modern day reimagining envisages all three of Byron's ladies (and the poet himself) meeting in the most important place in any house party - the bathroom.
Eclipsing Stars by Kaely Michels-Gualtieri
'Eclipsing Stars: Barnum. Booth. Lincoln.' is an extract from a historical drama told through the eyes of circus impresario, P. T. Barnum, who serves as both ringmaster and reckoner, guiding the audience through the intertwined fates of John Wilkes Booth, Edwin Booth, and Abraham Lincoln.
See You by Wilf Jenkinson (only looking for an AD)
'See You' is an honest reflection on modern gay relationships, relating the problematic world of the characters to a sense of universal order. It also voices a specific London dialogue, rarely heard on Cambridge stages.
