ABUELA is looking for a DIRECTOR!

Festival of New WritingDDS
19:30, Thu 12th – Sat 14th March 2026 at Howard Theatre, Downing College
Lent Week 7

I am Clara (she/her) and I am excited to bring “Abuela” to life! The play explores queer coming-of-age and complex family relationships within a contemporary Latin American context. If any of this interests you, please consider applying!

Fifteen-year-old Elisa has just kissed another girl at her devout Catholic school, and her grandmother Josefina is the only one who knows. If her mother Carmen finds out, the fallout could tear their home apart.

But this is Caracas. Outside, shotguns and protests are routine. The water has been cut off again. The neighbour downstairs is preparing a chicken sacrifice. Carmen narrowly escaped an armed robbery on her way home. Survival is already a daily struggle.

Set inside a multigenerational, all-female home in the heart of Venezuela’s capital, “Abuela” explores queer adolescence, inherited faith, and the layered relationships between mothers and daughters in a country shaped by devotion, scarcity, and unrest.

Please email Clara (she/her) cem215@cam.ac.uk if you would like to be considered for this role by 23:59 on Tuesday 10th of February, telling me about about yourself and answering the following questions:

Why do you want to direct “Abuela”?

How do you envision working with a small cast to create powerful character dynamics?

What previous directing and / or theatre experience do you have? I am also interested to know about non-theatre experiences and interests that you think will make you ideal for the role of director.

Contact cem215@cam.ac.uk before 11th Feb 2026 00:00 for more details.
