This production contains references to death, execution, and political violence; depictions of authoritarian control and surveillance; coercion around reproduction and intimacy; references to suffocation; discussions of grief and loss; and moments of dark humour. There are also references to self-harm and suicide ideation, presented within a fictional and critical context.

We’re casting a small ensemble for a rehearsed reading of Kolony, a new political sci-fi play. We’re looking for actors to play: The Master – the authoritarian leader of the Kolony; charismatic, intelligent, and dangerous Bloke (BAME role) – a former miner turned revolutionary figure; articulate, volatile, and idealistic Dean Bertrand Scholz – a gentle, principled Kolonist whose belief in love challenges the system Lecta – a junior Kolonist whose quiet competence places her at the centre of change The Kolony – an ensemble of Kolonists who function collectively as a chorus, shifting between individual voices and group presence All roles are open-casting unless otherwise specified. We’re especially interested in actors excited by ensemble work and new writing.

Auditions for Kolony: Cambridge (Rehearsed Reading)

Kolony is a new political sci-fi play set in a Martian mining settlement, exploring power, love, and collective responsibility after a revolution fails. The play is ensemble-driven, formally playful, and shifts genre across its three acts (thriller, romantic comedy, political tragedy). This rehearsed reading forms part of the development of the script.

The project is also being developed as part of my MSt in Writing for Performance dissertation, and performers will be asked to sign consent forms relating to the academic context of the work.

We are looking to cast the following roles:

The Master
The authoritarian leader of the Kolony. Intelligent, controlled, and deeply convinced of his own necessity. This role requires clarity of thought, authority, and the ability to hold tension without bluster.

Bloke (BAME role)
A former miner turned revolutionary figure. Articulate, volatile, and idealistic, with strong moral convictions and emotional intensity.

Dean Bertrand Scholz
A gentle, principled Kolonist whose belief in love and individuality quietly threatens the system.

Lecta
A junior Kolonist who begins as an observer and becomes central to collective change. Thoughtful, practical, and quietly brave.

The Kolony (Ensemble)
An ensemble of Kolonists who function both as individuals and as a collective chorus. Strong listening skills and an interest in ensemble work are essential.

The intention is to mount a full production later in Easter term. Actors cast in the rehearsed reading will be offered first refusal / first consideration for the full production, though participation in the later production is not a requirement for this project.

We’re keen to hear from actors who are:

  • Interested in new writing and political theatre
  • Excited by ensemble-driven work
  • Comfortable with heightened language and overlapping dialogue

All roles are open-casting unless otherwise specified. We strongly encourage applications from performers of all backgrounds.

This is a rehearsed reading, not a full production. The focus will be on the text, ensemble storytelling, and collaborative exploration rather than memorisation or staging.

Auditions will be in-person. You will be sent sides beforehand, but there is no expectation for you to be off-book.

Please email dmpb2@cam.ac.uk to book an audition slot. If you aren't able to make the one listed below, please message anyway. I can work around your timings.
