THE COLOUR OF WATER is looking for a DIRECTOR!

Festival of New WritingDDS
19:30, Thu 12th – Sat 14th March 2026 at Howard Theatre, Downing College
Lent Week 7

Hi, I’m Brian, and I’m opening applications for a director  for my one-act play The Colour of Water, which has been selected for staging at the Cambridge New Writing Festival this year, taking place at Howard Theatre at Downing on March 12–14.

Set in a university hallway in Zurich on a bright summer day, the play follows a group of four academics as one of them tries to manage a video call with his formidable grandmother, newly admitted to a lakeside care home. As their conversation veers from gossip to metaphor to mortality, a strange “Mystic Beast” begins appearing in the shadows of the building—half nuisance, half omen.
The play is dialogue-driven and actor-centred, moving from dry comedy into something more uncanny and tender as grief and imagination leak into the room.

If you’re interested, it would be great to know:
What directing or theatre experience do you have so far, if any?
What’s a production you’ve seen recently that excited you (and why)?
What draws you to The Colour of Water specifically?
The play centers on a series of video calls with a grandmother—how would you imagine staging this (live, projection, something else)?

Contact bja37@cam.ac.uk before 21st Feb 2026 00:00 for more details.
