Applications open for Musical Director

The Cambridge Greek Play committee is excited to announce that musical applications are now open for the Cambridge Greek Play 2026!

Every three years a production of ancient Greek drama is staged in Cambridge, in the original language with English subtitles. The show has professional direction and design, and student actors and crew. No prior knowledge of ancient Greek is expected or required. This is a tradition that goes back to 1882; one which has attracted some of the best actors, musicians and composers of their generation (including in recent years Tom Hiddleston!).

We are pleased to announce that this year’s production will be of Euripides’ Ion. The main rehearsal period will take place in September, prior to the show in October.

In an exciting turn, this year’s production will feature a mix of professional and student musicians, who will be playing music expressly composed for the play by Professor in Composition Richard Causton. The music will be written for an ensemble comprising clarinet, percussion, violin, cello, recorder, accordion and q’anun (the Middle-Eastern lyre), including professional musicians joining us especially from Greece.

The role of the Music Director is to support and oversee the musical elements of the show. Although it is not envisaged that the performances will be conducted, the role will include conducting/leading the instrumental ensemble in rehearsal, as well as individual work with cast actors to assist them in learning songs/musical cues. The successful applicant will be a fluent conductor and pianist, able to accompany and coach singers, and to respond with flexibility to the musical needs of the production. A degree of ability equivalent to grade 8 or above in piano is required for this role.

Applications must be sent in by Thursday 30th April to be considered. Please include in your application: Your name, crsid, phone number, college and instrument Why you want to be considered for this role Any relevant previous experience, including your level of ability on piano as well as conducting experience a short video of yourself conducting.

Please be aware that there will be no formal auditions, but we may wish to arrange short meetings depending on the number of applicants.
