PUSHKIN'S LITTLE TRAGEDIES Low time commitment & high drama! Two obsessions. One evening. Envy and passion. Pushkin's Little Tragedies are psychological duels where a single idea becomes a world, and a world is brought to ruin by a single, fatal choice. This double bill presents two of his most exciting studies: - Mozart and Salieri – an eternal conflict of a jealous hard-working craftsman with a careless genius. Poison in a glass of wine. - The Stone Guest – a life in pursuit of eros that culminates in a well-deserved, yet tragically picturesque death. Madrid, passion, duels and a ghost from Hell.
- Sat 16th May, 15:00–Sun 17th May, 12:00, Frazer Room, Trinity College
Why you should audition (even in exam term):
- Rehearsals will respect your time – the cast for both plays is small, so I as a director promise to schedule the rehearsals in a way convenient for everyone.
- Miniature master-class in tragedy – staged with sharp, modern clarity, this is classical theatre stripped to its essence.
- Corpus Playroom – intimate and intense, one of the best spaces in Cambridge to act.
- Russian drama at its finest – created by the legendary poet under censorship, at the height of his creative glory.
Auditions:
- Saturday 16th May, 15.00-16.00
- If this time does not work for you, please contact me and we will schedule an individual slot! Feel free to send self-tapes as well.
The roles:
Mozart and Salieri
- Mozart – lighthearted, cheerful genius. Feels his death approaching as he composes the Requiem. Piano skills highly needed for this role.
The Stone Guest
- Leporello – his servant. Pragmatic, cynical, the realist commentator.
- Laura – femme fatale of Madrid. Hot temper, desired by many, Don Juan's ex-lover.
- Don Carlos – vengeful, passionate, full of rage. Don Juan killed his brother.
- The Statue of the Commander – the Stone Guest himself. Supernatural vengeance. Your chance to drag Don Juan straight to Hell.
- Monk – pious resident of the local monastery who cannot help but admit Dona Anna's charms.
- First/Second/Third Guest – friends and admirers of Laura.
Double casting note: Monk can double with Leporello (both observers/commentators/servants). The Statue can double with Don Carlos (both judges/vengeful spirits).
Mozart: "Villainy and genius, as you'll agree, my friend, sit ill together."
Salieri: "You think so?" (He pours the poison.)
