Girl Torque explores the different lives of women who inhabit the workplace of engineering that has previously been extremely male dominated. Inspired by real events, a naïve sixteen-year-old girl enters the working world of engineering, where it unfolds to be an entirely different place from what she has prepared for in school, and it becomes clear how being a young woman in a male domineering defence company presents unique challenges and traumatic experiences for a young person who hasn’t yet experienced the world in such a way. Girl Torque places a window within a real workplace which has been joined by young
women. It shows what destruction such an environment can do to a future self, and what little options are offered by weak people in positions of power. Apprenticeships have little depiction in storytelling yet offer a fascinating angle on young people expected to act like older professionals, and older professionals acting like young children. Girl Torque interweaves a nuanced social commentary whilst providing charming comedic relief of the true and relatable workplace realities which are often so far from our imaginations

Director : Preferred but not required: Experience in STEM or a professional workplace I’m looking for a director  who really understands the feelings discussed within Girl Torque, the fine line between the uncomfortable and funny, and the witty tone we’re trying to achieve, creating a relationship between the audience and the women coming face to face with discrimination. Some of these women are confused, some are angry, all are sad! I want to create a certain amount of vulnerability with the audience masked with a layer of comedy where the women are trying to remain high spirited and ‘perky’. I’m looking for a director  who is: Organised & good with time management. Good at getting a group enthused. Comedy focused but not neglecting the dark! Above all, enthusiastic about the project! In your application, tell me a bit about: Your experience directing (especially Comedy). Why you want to direct Girl Torque. Any ideas for how you may direct the show. Producer : I’m looking for a producer  I can work with closely, you won’t be completely on your own - I’ll be helping. In your application, tell me a bit about: Your experience producing (especially in Cambridge). Why you want to produce Girl Torque. How you may go about production. Please send all applications to nicola.irvine@landladyfilms.com by 27th March 2023. Rehearsals will start w/c 23rd April (Week 0), so please ensure you’ll be in or around Cambridge then.
