Girl Torque explores the different lives of women who inhabit the workplace of engineering that has previously been extremely male dominated. Inspired by real events, a naïve sixteen-year-old girl enters the working world of engineering, where it unfolds to be an entirely different place from what she has prepared for in school, and it becomes clear how being a young woman in a male domineering defence company presents unique challenges and traumatic experiences for a young person who hasn’t yet experienced the world in such a way. Girl Torque places a window within a real workplace which has been joined by young
women. It shows what destruction such an environment can do to a future self, and what little options are offered by weak people in positions of power. Apprenticeships have little depiction in storytelling yet offer a fascinating angle on young people expected to act like older professionals, and older professionals acting like young children. Girl Torque interweaves a nuanced social commentary whilst providing charming comedic relief of the true and relatable workplace realities which are often so far from our imaginations
