Bertarido, King of Lombardy, has been deposed by Grimoaldo, leaving behind his wife (Rodelinda) and son (Flavio), who believe him to be dead. Grimoaldo has been granted Eduige’s (Bertarido’s sister) hand in marriage. Bertarido, with the help of his friend Unulfo, plans to regain the throne.
