War is Peace. Freedom is Slavery. Ignorance is Strength. Love is Bondage.
Junayd Islam, who created the near sell-out Desert Thirst and Jerusalem Winds, is back with another original play to enrapture audiences and inspire introspection.
1984 Revolution of The Soul is an intergenerational, cross-cultural dialogue with the celebrated English novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four. Retelling the dystopian story, the play calls to mention contemporary politics events and technologies we take for granted to enhance -and sometimes challenge- Orwell’s admonitions. Going further, Junayd intersperses the dystopian plot with poetry and Sufi tales, revealing a spiritual dimension to Orwell’s premonitions.
This is more than a theatrical dramatisation of Nineteen Eighty-Four. This is a production driven by the desire for connection and meaning that will leave audiences with existential questions of personal and political dimensions.
