Based on true events (kind of). Prince Charles, the future King of England, tires of his Father’s marriage propositions and is encouraged by his best friend, the Duke of Buckingham, to take matters into his own hands. Disguised under fake names and aided by their long-suffering manservant Hob, we join them as they attempt to sneak across a divided continent to Spain, England’s bitter rivals, in a reckless bid to win the hand of the Princess Maria Anna. A quest that will change the course of history…
Beginning as a Renaissance road-trip sex comedy, and arriving as a universal tale about growing up, A Prince Abroad asks what happens when over-inflated egos and laddish bravado collide with youthful insecurity and the fragility of first love on a very public stage. Smashing together the modern sensibilities of a “lads holiday” with seventeenth-century diplomacy, the play is part Blackadder, part Superbad - and a farcical showcase of the true cost of maturity (especially when you’re a Prince).
