'So smile the heavens upon this holy act'
1834, Anne Lister and Ann Walker ‘took sacrament’ in Holy Trinity Church, an act enclosed in a backdrop of outward pressure and prejudice to their love.
Romeo and Juliet, set in the regency age, is performed, for the first time, in Peterhouse Chapel. With a cast of female, non-binary, trans and gender-queer actors, the production marks a culmination of Pride Month. Entwined with love letters and poems from both past and present, the show forms both a celebration for the enduring beauty of queer love, but also a vigil for queer loss. Despite the outward pressure facing Romeo and Juliet, Anne Lister and Ann Walker, and countless other queer individuals, past and present, the show demonstrates that queer love has always existed and will always exist.
