In 1928, James Douglas labelled Radclyffe Hall’s 'The Well of Loneliness' as a ‘book that must be suppressed’.
What followed was a media storm, an infamous trial, and later, the banning of the novel for ‘obscenity’. The novel features one of the first depictions of lesbian love in British literature. From 26th to 30th January, the novel will be staged in a brand new adaptation in the Corpus Playroom.
The adaptation focuses on the ultimate power of literature: literature as a source of creation, literature as shaping how we see our identity, and finally, literature as a form of resistance.
