Avi ran away the week before his Bar Mitzvah. Years later, now a painter, broke, adrift, and fixated on mermaids, he calls home asking for a loan. The condition? Come back. Finish what you fled.
He returns to find the house changed, his sister married into Orthodoxy, and a faith he no longer recognises woven into the walls.
