Smorgasbord is the Corpus Playroom’s eclectic showcase of new student-written theatre. For over a decade, this evening has been a rite of passage for emerging student playwrights in Cambridge, and it’s the event at the heart of the Corpus Playroom’s calendar.

We particularly seek to give a spotlight to those who haven’t previously had their work audienced, and to anyone who feels that they have an underrepresented narrative or cultural lineage to bring to the fore.

A Bright Room Called Day – Screw Master

A Bright Room Called Day follows a group of artists and activists in 1930s Germany, as they grapple with the rise of fascism around them. Punctuating this narrative are "interruptions" from Zillah: an activist who has moved from the US to Berlin during the Reagan administration, and is studying the rise of the Nazis. Tony Kushner (author of Angels In America, among other plays) combines poetry, fantasy, and historical fiction, to create a piece as compelling as it is experimental.

Bathwater – Set and Props Builder

Avi ran away the week before his Bar Mitzvah. Years later, now a painter, broke, adrift, and fixated on mermaids, he calls home asking for a loan. The condition? Come back. Finish what you fled.
He returns to find the house changed, his sister married into Orthodoxy, and a faith he no longer recognises woven into the walls.

Bathwater drifts between the surreal and the sacred. A play of submerged truths, tangled inheritance, and the murky thresholds between myth and memory.
